Disclaimer: I’m not affiliated with Grok or xAI, and I’m not getting paid to write this guide. I just think it’s a good tool and want to share how I use it with you!

Step 1: Head to Grok

First, go to the Grok website or app.

Step 2: Make a free account

Sign up for an account—it’s free and quick. You’ll get a limited amount of use without paying, so you can dive right in and test it out.

Step 3: Find the “create image” option

Once you’re logged in, look for the “Create Image” box or button. Click it to start making your image.

Step 4: Describe your scene

Now, tell Grok what you want to see. Write a description of your image—think of it like giving directions to a friend. Be clear about the main thing you want (like a person on a boat) and add some details (like what they’re wearing or what’s in the background). Don’t worry if it’s not perfect yet; you can tweak it later. For example, I started with this:

“Create an image of a person on a boat. This person is rowing down a river, in the distance at the back of the image is a old bridge, the bridge is old but has cars travelling over it. The person at the centre of the image on the boat has a red t shirt on and they are smiling. The river itself is calm, the weather and clouds are looming in the distance and sun is poking through the clouds. It's towards late evening and the sun is low”

Step 5: Break it down to build the layers

Think about your image in pieces:

  • What’s the main focus? (For me, it was the person on the boat.)

  • What’s around them? (A calm river.)

  • What’s in the background? (An old bridge with cars.)

  • Any extra details? (A red t-shirt, a smile, golden evening light.)
This helps you build the scene step by step.

Step 6: Ask Grok to make it better

If you want, you can ask Grok to improve your description before creating the image. I did this and ended up with:

"Create a stunning image of a person rowing a small boat down a calm river during the golden hour of late evening. The person, positioned centrally in the image, is wearing a vibrant red t-shirt and has a warm, content smile on their face. Gentle ripples form around the oars as they move through the water. In the background, an old, weathered bridge stretches across the river, its worn stone and steel structure carrying cars that appear as faint silhouettes against the fading light. The sky is a dramatic blend of looming clouds with the sun breaking through in golden rays, casting a soft, diffused glow over the scene. The tranquil water reflects the interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the serene yet dynamic atmosphere of the moment."

Step 7: Generate your image

Once you’re happy with your description, hit the button to create the image. Grok will work its magic and show you the result.

Step 8: The results!

Take a look at your image. Mine had a tiny bit of weirdness (like some distortion), but it was still pretty good. If you want, you can refine your description and try again. Just know that too many tweaks might make even more distorted.

As you can see the image is slightly distorted with the paddles.

This is the better of the two which looks pretty spot on.
